Did anybody miss that? Let me say it again.

CLIMATE CHANGE, IF WE CONTINUE TO IGNORE IT, WILL LEAD TO OUR EXTINCTION.

There is no greater threat to humanity. Not ISIS. Not illegal immigrants. Not even delusional, despotic Presidents.

None of them are a match for Mother Nature.

If you’re still a Denier, well, pardon me but, pull your head out. This is real, it is urgent, and denying it won’t keep it away.

It’s not a Democratic issue, a Republican issue, or even an American issue. It is a human issue, and it demands all our attention.

If we fail to give it, we’re done for. Period.

 

Are you all with me? Good, listen up:

Last week, a resolution was introduced to Congress declaring a Climate Change Emergency. The resolution, H.Con.Res.52, sponsored by Senator Bernie Sanders, and Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Earl Blumenauer, and co-sponsored by several other Representatives reads, in part,

Expressing the sense of Congress that there is a climate emergency which demands a massive-scale mobilization to halt, reverse, and address its consequences and causes.

The resolution lays out several reasons for this urgency. Here’s just a few of them:

“…in 2018, the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change projected that the Earth could warm 1.5 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels as early as 2030;

“…the climatic changes resulting from global warming above 1.5 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels, including changes resulting from global warming of more than 2 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels, are projected to result in irreversible, catastrophic changes to public health, livelihoods, quality of life, food security, water supplies, human security, and economic growth;

“…in 2019, the United Nations Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on
Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services found that human-induced climate change is pushing the planet toward the sixth mass species extinction and thus threatening the food security, water supply, and the wellbeing of billions of people;

 
“…even with global warming up to 1.5 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels, the planet is projected to experience—
(1) a significant rise in sea levels;
(2) extraordinary loss of biodiversity; and
(3) intensifying droughts, prodigious floods, devastating wildfires, and other extreme weather events;

 
“…in the United States, massive, comprehensive, and urgent governmental action is required immediately to achieve the transitions of those systems in response to the severe existing and projected economic, social, public health, and national security threats posed by the climate crisis;

 
“…the massive scope and scale of action necessary to stabilize the climate will require unprecedented levels of public awareness, engagement, and deliberation to develop and implement effective, just, and equitable policies to address the climate crisis…”

You get the picture? We’re in deep you-know-what. And it’s gonna take a large-scale course correction to avoid a total catastrophe that wipes us clean off the face of the earth.

It’s that serious, friends. It needs our attention right now.

So, what can I do?, you ask. Glad you asked.

One thing you can do is educate yourself on the issue. I know, it’s boring as hell to read about, but we need to have a good idea of what we’re up against. https://www.acciona.com/climate-change/ is an excellent website where you can learn about the causes and consequences of climate change, as well as ways to cope with and adapt to it.

Recycle more, use less energy, plant a tree or two, talk to your friends about it, get everyone’s mind on climate change. Because it’s gonna take all of us.

Support this resolution. Tell your folks in Congress to support it. No matter what The Man in the Orange Head thinks, climate change is the real thing, and nothing less than our survival as a species depends on how we deal with it.

Oh, and don’t do it for me. Do it for the children. They’re going to need someplace to live.

  5. Well said. I was encouraged with GOP Senator Lindsey Graham calling on the president to admit climate change is real. This is in light of the formation of the Roosevelt Conservation Caucus. It is about twelve years too late, but it is eventful. Have you seen the HBO documentary “Ice on Fire?” It speaks of putting less carbon in the air and taking more carbon out of the air.

  6. Does anyone want to see a microcosm of what Climate disasters are going to do to the rest of the world. Take a look at the Canadian province of Alberta this year. We have lost just short of 2,000,000 acres of forest to wildfires as of two weeks ago, most of it boreal forests. The flooding in central Alberta is the worst in 20 years in many places, some of which are getting flooded over and over due to tropical style rainfall. On top of that, tornadoes are touching down in numbers never seen before, all over a generally tornado free area.
    Boreal forests, just like jungle forests, and our best natural friends in cleaning the carbon out of the air. Add the trees cut down by lumber companies and biomass producers, We are losing the war against airborne carbon dioxide, one of the main greenhouse gases, and making it even worse by cutting down trees or not protecting them against man-made wildfires.
    This is not taking into account at all that we are fracking for dirty oil at a mind-boggling rate. While the rich are filling their pockets and bank accounts with money they will never be able to spend, we are losing our lives.

  7. I hope that Senator Bernie Sanders has better luck than Britain’s Caroline Lucas (Green party). When she tried to put motions through on climate change in our UK Parliament a few months ago, hardly any politicians turned up for the debate. Climate and its consequences, had not been brought up for years, yet, despite advanced announcements of this particular debate, most of the people who really count, failed to show up.

    There are a few people who are sounding the alarm, that we are not being told the truth. That it is already too late to stop the heating of our planet. If you look at what politicians in power are actually doing right now, it is clear that they are setting up criteria to separate and protect themselves, but not everyone. The places that will die first, are those that are being shut out with no chance to migrate to safer places.

    Harare, Zimbabwe (a major city) has cut water supply off to half the population as two reservoirs have completely dried up. The other two still functioning, are so polluted, they cannot afford the chemicals to clean them up for safe water supply. Typhoid fever is breaking out across the city, and Harare has just documented its first case of Ebola.
    A population of 2,123,132 people are directly in danger from the effects of climate change.

    3.8 Million people in Cape Town, South Africa, are facing severe water shortages as rainfall patterns have changed. There is unrest as the poor cannot receive water (supply often cut off to their taps) while golf courses and rich communities continue to take precious water.

    21 Major Indian cities will run out of groundwater reservoirs by 2020. Chennai, a city of 9,000,000, has seen severe water shortages this year, resulting in truck loads of bottled water to survive. Monsoon rains, typically required to refill supply reservoirs, have changed and drought is a new reality.

    The crisis facing humanity is not years down the road, as some would indicate. It is here and tapping on the door.

    The World Economic Forum in 2019 stated ‘water shortage’ as the number one crisis facing people this year.
    The countries most affected are very often war torn too, Afghanistan, Syria, Somalia, Ethiopia, Chad, Haiti, being just a few.

    President Trump is building his walls and offering up racist views so that his followers are indoctrinated into not caring about the people who are about to die directly because of our heating world.

    Humanity is about to face its greatest crisis with huge life loss. But some nations are deliberately ignoring it and closing their borders tight. People have to ask themselves if they are happy to go along with this Noah’s ark mentality? If they are, then they are stupid. This crisis will also affect them, it can’t be shut out with closed walls or weapons. It is coming to a town near you!
